A '''writing system''' is a method of visually representing verbal communication, based on a [[script (Unicode)|script]] and a set of rules regulating its use. The general attributes of writing systems can be placed into broad categories such as [[alphabet]]s, [[syllabary|syllabaries]], or [[logogram|logographies]], although any particular system can have attributes of more than one category. In the alphabetic category, a standard set of [[letter (alphabet)|letters]] represents speech sounds. In a syllabary, each symbol correlates to a [[syllable]] or [[mora (linguistics)|mora]]. In a logography, each character represents a [[word]], [[morpheme]], or semantic unit. Other categories include [[abjad]]s, which differ from alphabets in that vowels are not indicated, and [[abugida]]s, where each character represents a consonant–vowel pairing.

Unlike speech, which evolved naturally in humans, writing systems were invented human artifacts and have not been universally adopted. == Classification of writing systems ==
Writing systems are typically classified based on what their primary symbols represent. The most common framework, developed by linguist [[Peter T. Daniels]], divides writing systems into six major categories.

=== Logographic writing systems ===

A logogram is a single written character which represents a complete grammatical word or a [[morpheme]]. Most Chinese characters are classified as logograms. Because each character represents a meaningful part of a word rather than a sound, a vast number of logograms are needed to write a language. Therefore, learning a logographic system requires memorizing thousands of characters. 

No known writing system is purely logographic; all incorporate some phonetic elements. For example, the Chinese script uses "phonetic compounds," where part of a character suggests the meaning and another part suggests the pronunciation. The ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs and the Maya script also combined logograms with phonetic complements.

A syllabary is a set of written symbols that represent the [[syllable]]s (or moras) which make up words. A symbol in a syllabary typically represents a consonant sound followed by a vowel sound, or just a vowel alone.

The Japanese writing system uses two distinct syllabaries, [[Hiragana]] and [[Katakana]] (collectively known as [[kana]]), in conjunction with logographic [[Kanji]] characters. Other examples of syllabaries include the [[Cherokee syllabary]] invented by [[Sequoyah]] and the [[Linear B]] script used for [[Mycenaean Greek]].

An alphabet is a small set of letters (basic written symbols), each of which roughly represents a [[phoneme]] of a spoken language. In a perfectly phonemic alphabet, there is a direct one-to-one correspondence between letters and sounds. However, due to historical spelling conventions and language evolution, many alphabets (like the one used for English) have a complex relationship between spelling and pronunciation, known as a deep [[orthography]].

The [[Latin alphabet]] is the most widely used writing system in the world today. It originated from the [[Greek alphabet]], which itself was derived from the Phoenician script. The Greek alphabet is historically significant because it was the first writing system to introduce dedicated symbols for vowels.

The most prominent modern examples are the [[Arabic script]] and the [[Hebrew alphabet]]. While pure abjads lack vowels entirely, many modern abjads have optional diacritical marks (such as the Arabic [[Harakat]] or Hebrew [[Niqqud]]) that can be added to indicate vowels, primarily used in religious texts, children's books, or for disambiguation.

An abugida is a segmental writing system in which consonant–vowel sequences are written as a unit: each unit is based on a consonant letter, and vowel notation is secondary. This contrasts with a full alphabet, where vowels have status equal to consonants, and with an abjad, where vowel marking is absent or optional.

In an abugida, the basic consonant letter has an inherent vowel (often an 'a' sound). To change the vowel or remove it completely, specific diacritics or structural modifications are applied to the consonant symbol. The [[Brahmic scripts]] of South and Southeast Asia, such as [[Devanagari]] (used for [[Hindi]] and [[Sanskrit]]), [[Bengali–Assamese script|Bengali]], [[Thai script|Thai]], and [[Tibetan script|Tibetan]], are the most widespread examples of abugidas. The most famous featural writing system is the Korean [[Hangul]] script, created by [[Sejong the Great]] in 1443. In Hangul, the basic consonant letters are designed to mimic the physical shape of the speech organs (mouth, tongue, throat) when pronouncing them. These featural symbols are then grouped together into syllabic blocks for writing.

== Directionality ==
Different writing systems are written in different directions. The earliest writing systems often had flexible directionality, meaning they could be written horizontally in either direction or vertically.
