The '''cat''' (scientific name: ''Felis catus''), commonly referred to as the '''domestic cat''' or '''house cat''', is a small, [[carnivore|carnivorous]] [[mammal]] belonging to the family [[Felidae]]. It is the only domesticated species within this family. Advances in archeology and [[Genetics|genetics]] have shown that the domestication of the cat occurred in the Near East around 7500 BC. The domestic cat is a member of the family Felidae, a group that had a common ancestor about 10–15 million years ago. Modern phylogenetic analysis has demonstrated that all domestic cats are descendants of the [[African wildcat]] (''Felis silvestris lybica''). 

The domestication process is considered to have been mutually beneficial (a [[commensalism|commensal]] relationship).
